Today Brigitte and I led a Demo at the West Hurley Library for 15 children and about half a dozen Moms.

We first described some common spices and their uses while passing around samples of those spices for the children to see in their natural forms.

The children got to chose a cloth bag to make into a sweet bag (sachet). They then got a chance to pound spices with a mortar and pestle to share the experience of folks who used to work with spices, and choose which spices/florals they wanted in their sweet bag.

Some had an idea of how to sew the bags, others wanted help, but in the end they all did most of their own sewing!

The kids were great. Attentive, engaged and hands on with the project. There was a question and answer session when all the bags were finished.

I want to thank Brigitte from taking time from her busy schedule to help hold this demo.

Next West Hurley Library demo will be on 25 April, when the children will learn about Medieval Cooking.
